Route to Beverley

From Wetherby Market Place, cross High Street and take Horsefair alongside St Angelo’s. Turn right thro’ lights at end and follow rd. to roundabout and cross AI via bridge. Keep straight on app 4 miles to Wighill. Turn left and app 6 miles to T junction at edge of Askham Brian.  Turn rt to roundabout . Take care and cross A164 via bridge and immed left into Copmanthorpe.  At T junction with Indian Restaurant opposite, turn Rt and soon left onto Station Rd.  Over rail bridge.  Continue to cross roads straight over and after some bends go left into Mill Lane and L again into Acaster Malbis to ride past pub.

Look for disused rail bridge over road and immed. under it, take path on Rt up to Sustrans track. Ride away from York and after passing wayside rest area, take exit from rail track on Rt to road into Naburn but turn sharp left, at bottom of path,  eventually coming to busy A19. Turn left but v.soon Rt at lights and go app. 4 miles to Wheldrake. Turn L in Wheldrake  to Elvington. T junction. Turn Rt. Continue over River Derwent ( traffic lights) to Sutton-upon Derwent and follow same road round right towards Menbourne.

 Go thro’ Melbourne and app.1/2 mile after village, turn right signed Everingham 3 miles.  Down this road to T junction where turn left to Everingham and thro’ it to Harswell.  Same road brings you to A614. Turn left but soon carefully turn Rt signed North Cliffe and South Cliffe.

 Beechwood Café on corner will be open ‘till about for coffee etc.

 At N Cliffe, Turn Rt for S Cliffe and after app 2 miles turn left up short but steep hill to Hotham. After Hotham,cross A1034 to South Newbald where take immed. right up Trundlegate.  Biggest climb of the day but great views.

Carry on, straight over cross road then look for sign to Beverley taking you into Walkington. Turn left in Village, past duck pond to lights- straight ahead over cattle grid to the Westwood.

 Take left fork near windmill and go into town thro’ houses. Turn left,then Rt on Newbiggin and look for lunch in town

Return route:

Ride past St Mary’s church to bar. Go through and take road ahead A164. This becomes A1035 and continue to roundabout with B1248 to right. Take this and quite soon turn left into Cherry Burton.  Leaving Cherry B, take Right fork to Etton and at T junction, turn Right and v.soon left up Chantry Lane and then left into Warter Road ,following Sustrans route signs now. Follow for app. 4 miles and look out for crossroads where turn L following blue Sustrans sign. Now Route 66.  (These are all tarmac roads and very good for cycling.)

 Keep on to Market Weighton. In MW, turn R on High St and look for blue Sustrans sign past public conveniences towards Londesborough.

 Keep Route 66 signs across A614 to Londesbro ,then at top of hill, turn Rt and then sharp L and keep on this all the way to Pocklington.

At end of Market Pl, turn R to Stamford Bridge Rd but soon take left at a petrol station. This brings you too A1079.

Cross it carefully turning right towards York but soon L to Sutton –upon –Derwent and then retrace morning route to Elvington, Wheldrake, Crockey Hill ( L at lights but soon R with care ), Sustrans track, Acaster Malbis  Copmanthorpe,over A64 and L before Askham Brian etc
