Thursday 30th May – Leyburn 83 miles

I met the Wheelers in Boroughbridge where they had made good time cycling into a strong northerly headwind.  10 of us were out for a day trip to Leyburn, Graham, Michael, Mike, Pete, Steve P, Steve W, Dennis, Ian, Sean F and myself. Coffee stop at Melmerby, too cold to sit outside but at least no rain.

Fully refreshed we continued north into the headwind to Bedale where Sean left us, before bearing west towards Leyburn along some lovely quiet rolling country lanes.  I was just discussing crank lengths with Steve W (as you do on a long ride), when I managed to jam my chain between my chainrings and the front mech coming to an abrupt halt. Luckily Mike was on hand to apply some brute force to the crank to release the chain and I was soon on my way again.

We had lunch in Leyburn at the Posthorn Tea rooms, a very friendly member of staff managed to squeeze us all inside and even served us beans on toast, going off menu.  Much appreciated!!  Discussion soon turned to the elections and a review of previous elections and politicians going back as far as the 1970s.  At least we don’t have to choose between Trump and Biden!

The ride home involved a lot of downhill with the wind behind us so we made good time to Ripon, again following some lovely quiet lanes with very little traffic that Graham knows.  The way back from Ripon was the usual way through Littlethorpe and then through Bishop Monkton where I turned up the hill for home.  The rest of the group continued through Knaresborough back to Wetherby.  Great day out and managed to dodge the rain showers and keep dry!
