Wetherby – Birkin, Saturday 8th April 2023, 45 miles

Three dedicated riders: Glyn, Steve B and Nick met at The Shambles for a ride to Birkin, picking up three not so dedicated club members en route at Bowcliffe Hall. These being Bob L, Alec and myself. Setting off at a good pace towards and then across the A64, which was surprisingly quiet, with each of us sharing the lead. We passed through Aberford, Micklefield and took the minor road to Lumby and then continued on to Hillam and our cafe stop. It was a cracking, sunny day but a little chilly but by the time we reached Birkin we were all pretty warm. On riding into the car park we were greeted with several Easter stalls selling crafts etc, ices and cakes (Frank would have been in his element!). The place was buzzing with children on Easter egg hunts and cyclists in abundance. Even so, we got served quickly, sitting outside and enjoying the sun.

Setting off for our return and retracing our route back to Hillam and then on to Monk Fryston, South Milford, Sherburn and towards Lotherton Hall when Nick suggested we divert to Towton to add a few more miles on. Then through Stutton where the group split with Nick and I going down Windmill Hill and the others going their various ways home. A very enjoyable ride and route, thanks to Nick. I guess Glyn would have done another 20 more miles than us.

I would have preferred Steve B to have compiled this report as I haven’t got his journalistic flair and humour but hey-ho, this will have to do!
