With the weather outlook for wind and rain it was good to see eleven riders in The Shambles . Graham’s plan was a circular route around York and our group consisted of Tim, Michael B, Mike, Steve, Steve P, Phil, Geoff, Pete, Graham, Sean and Glyn. Not long after setting off, the rain started and a quick stop to don waterproof jackets was made. As is nearly always the case, the rain stopped almost immediately! Our first port of call was at Teehee in Easingwold where after refreshments, Geoff and Michael B left us for pre arranged ‘domestic’ duties. With the the sun out and the wind at our backs we sped along the country lanes until the shout of ‘puncture’ halted us in our tracks. Mike’s turn this time. As we were not too far from our lunch destination, five of us ventured on to Dean’s Garden Centre. The cafe was very busy so after a quick phone call to Graham, it was decided that we would all meet up at Breezy Knees cafe. Unfortunately this was closed. Time for plan C. A sign at Forest Park Golf Club stated that the cafe was open and offered a welcome to all. We were indeed warmly welcomed and most went for the Birdie Breakfast. Coming with a pot of tea and all for £7.00, this was a wise and delicious choice. Time was getting on now and the pre planned ‘twiddle bits’ were cast aside in favour of a more direct route home. There had been a slight shower whilst we were eating but the sun sun shone as we set of home. After travelling through Fulford and the University campus and on towards Naburn, we found ourselves on the usual route home, taking in Copmanthorpe, Wighill, Thorpe Arch and Walton where the group split for the riders to make their respective ways home. The weather had been very kind to us and even the few hiccups along the way could not dampen our spirits. A great ride in good company – approx 70 miles.
