Wetherby to Ripon, Saturday 25th February 2023, 59 miles

Frank T, Pete C and me (Phil W) met at the Shambles at 9.00am, planning to head North to Ripon and Boroughbridge, also to meet ride leader Nick H at the Cowthorpe bridge on the A168. We set off on a chilly, wet and windy morning, meeting Nick as planned and pleasantly surprised to be joined by Simon N as well.

The five of us toiled North in the adverse conditions, when Frank suggested we should stop at Rabbit Hill cafe for a cuppa and to review our options. After a short stop it was agreed that Pete and Frank would head to Knaresborough and the remaining three of Simon, Nick and Phil would ride to Ripon as originally planned, where Nick hoped we would meet Wheeler Mike Graham. The weather quickly improved as we continued up the A168 to the outskirts of Boroughbridge, turning through Roecliffe and Bishop Monkton, then North to Ripon Town Centre. Nick had said the Mike G might be in Oliver’s Pantry, sadly he wasn’t there so we didn’t stop and headed out of Ripon alongside the canal towpath and onto the Boroughbridge Road.

About a mile or so out of Ripon we turned right along a pleasant country lane through Skelton and into Boroughbridge, where we stopped at Plenty Cafe (it’s almost a tradition) for refreshments.  We then cycled south through the Dunsforths, Great Ouseburn, past Queen Ethelburgh’s, through Whixley and Cattal, so that Nick and Simon could return home to Tockwith.  I then completed the ride by cycling to the A168, heading through Deighton Gate into Wetherby.

A pleasant route with good company, as always. (Circa 49 miles)
