Wetherby – Masham, Thursday 26th January 2023, 70 miles

Before setting off on Thursday’s ride I learned a new phrase, “Route Meister”, from the man for whom the epithet might have been coined (he wasn’t talking about himself and he definitely wasn’t referring to me). Anyway, after an unfortunate tumble on the ice a couple of weeks ago our Thursday ride “Route Meister”, Graham was back with his regular Wednesday night WhatsApp message and a plan to ride to Masham.
A good turn out of riders in the Shambles on Thursdays morning: Gyn (on his spanking new winter come summer, Chameleon paint job, Cannondale) Phil, Steve W, Mike, Michael, Nick, Geoff, new member Tim (welcome), Graham, me and Dennis joining us in Knaresborough made eleven.
From Wetherby there’s a few ways to Masham, but in winter and against the wind it’s sensible to choose your route well so we stayed low and flat, split into two groups and went via Knaresborough, Staveley, Boroughbridge, Dishforth, Rainton, had a coffee stop at The Hub Cafe in Melmerby then on through West Tanfield to Masham. We relaxed and refuelled at Border House Teas in the market square. Phil, with Mike for company set off together on the most direct route home while the rest of us climbed the hills to Grewelthorpe then with the wind behind sailed back through Ripon and Knaresborough to Wetherby.
It was a good ride in winter, in good company – cheers all. 70 miles for most, 83 for Leeds contingent.
