Wetherby – Sherburn, Saturday 12th November 2022, 50 miles

A rather late report since it has been delegated back to me.
Five of us met in The Shambles . Alec, Pete C, Bob L, Bob J and me , Nick.
It was cool at first but good for the time of year. Last time I led a ride ,we had been to Otley. I checked records and we hadn’t been Sherburn way for a few weeks so off we go South. The first few miles are plain and well known but we passed the usual turning to Sherburn ,taking ,instead the lesser known and easily missed road by the Lumby Lions. This was nice with very little traffic and gave us the opportunity of a very short loop thro’ Lumby itself before coming back in to south Milford near the road we had left 20 mins earlier. Past the gatehouse to Steeton Hall we took the Newthorpe Road. Like the short stretch to Lumby and the later bit over to Saxton and Towton we were now on relatively high ground with good airy views for miles around. We rolled into Sherburn, having already decided to go to the café at the Aero Club. It’s a bit out of town but good when you get there and sausage ,eggs and bacon etc were enjoyed by all. As always. Back to Sherburn then and the Lotherton Road but turning at the top of that little hill for Saxton and Towton and the third lot of sunny spacious views. We paused at the Battlefield site (1461 for our foreign readers- we have history!), where we discussed the battle with much sympathy for the poor sods who fought on that icy cold day. Another turn before Tadcaster to Stutton and back to Bramham where Bob L and Alec went ahead while the rest dropped down Windmill Hill with Bob J spinning at an impressive rate on his fixed wheel. So home. We had seen some pleasant lanes and had good weather. We had all had to ride a bit to the start so our mileages would be about the same at slightly over 50
