Wetherby – Birkin, Thursday 17th February 2022, 50 miles

Two Amigos became Three !

Two intrepid Wheelers (Mike B and Graham B) headed out on the Walton Road and turned right to Boston Spa. From there we headed for Ulleskelf, just before which we met our third intrepid Wheeler – Steve W. Onwards towards Church Fenton, through Biggin and Bishop Wood to Thorpe Willoughby. Given the wind direction and strength – where were you heading I hear you ask?! Yes, through Gateforth, left on to Pale Lane and then right into the teeth of a fierce headwind, on to Birkin Road and to the café at Birkin. I think it’s fair to say that the three of us were pretty pleased to get to the café where the food was excellent as always and we could shelter from the wind.

Thoroughly replete we set off for home through Hillam, Lumby, South Milford, Sherburn in Elmet, Towton, Tadcaster and Walton. We had battled a strong wind that had been a cross-wind for much of the day, but on some sections on the return it was a strong headwind. As Steve W remarked, it was surprising how tired our legs felt, despite what was a relatively modest mileage in Thursday Wheeler terms. Steve W left Graham and I in Walton to head back to Aberford, where he had parked his car. We continued on to Wetherby where we parted company. All in all, due to the weather, a bit of a challenge despite it being a relatively short and flat ride. As always thanks to Graham for his unerring route planning.
