Wetherby – Pocklington, Thursday 13th January 2022, 74 miles

This week’s ride saw 7 riders meeting in the shambles and we picked up Nick on route. The 8 riders were myself Graham, Michael Brawley, Pete Dack, Sean, Dennis, Glyn, Mike Graham and of course Nick. It was a cool start but the sun was out and we had a tail wind. Easy ride via Wighill and Healaugh and on through Copmanthorpe to cross the Ouse at Naburn. We were now looking for a coffee stop and Pete who has recently had his 75th birthday had volunteered to pay. For some reason Crockey Hill was dismissed as a venue and we pinned our hopes on Caffe Valeria in Wheldrake. Luckily it was open and we parked our bikes and found there was plenty of room. Pleased to say the coffee was excellent and although the service was on the slow side nobody was reprimanded.

Back on our route we headed for Elvington but sadly passed a cyclist who looked like he may have been knocked off his bike. We didn’t stop as there were plenty of people attending. An ambulance soon passed us. Hope he’s OK.

We crossed the river and took the road through Melbourne to Pocklington. The market place was busy as we passed through and we made our way to the Mile Farm Shop for lunch. I think we all enjoyed our meal and I don’t think you can complain about the quality. Good food at a sensible price. The return journey took us through Yapham, Elvington, Wheldrake and Escrick. The wind was now in our faces and at times a little stronger than expected. We crossed the river again at Naburn and reversed our outward journey. Nick, Dennis and Mike left us at Askham Richard and took the road to Long Marston. Sean and Michael Brawley left us at Thorpe Arch. We got back into Wetherby at 4.10 which was slightly later than I was hoping for but it was still light.
