Wetherby – Leyburn, Sun 8 August 2021, 90 miles

Three intrepid adventurers brave dreadful weather to reach Leyburn! – well not really, apart from 20 mins rain on the way out as we left Boroughbridge, the weather was fine, even the wind changed direction to help us both out and back.

I have to admit that the trio that turned out in Wetherby market had read the gloomy weather reports and were probably hoping no one else would turn up so they could go back home. Nick, myself and guest rider Andrew Clayton were that trio, Nick and I on our winter bikes. We said we’d turn back if the weather broke and stop at Ripon but it wasn’t raining as we started. The route took us through Boroughbridge, skirted around Ripon and then cross country to Leyburn, stopping for refreshment at the Post Office/store at West Tanfield which has covered seats outside and does coffee too.

Lunch was at our usual cafe in Leyburn which did the job despite being busy and short-staffed. Nick forgot to take a photo in Leyburn but remembered as we passed the Harmby sign! The ride home was through Masham and Grewelthorpe to Ripon for an ice cream in the hot sunshine the back to Wetherby with Nick turning off just before. In Leyburn Andrew and I both toyed with the idea of adding a few miles at the end to push the total to 100 but that seemed less enticing by Wetherby so we went home as the skies finally darkened. All in all an unexpectedly pleasant ride!
