Sunday 1 Aug

Sunday 1 August
First day of August and some local rain in the morning almost led to ride cancellation. A few late phone calls got it going but with some compromise- Thirsk instead of Helmsley so no Wass Bank to look forward to. Just four of us headed up thro’ Wetherby debating the roads to Thirsk before we remembered that the nicest way is via Coxwold and Kilburn. We missed Easingwold for a change by going Raskelf and Husthwaite, passing the houses where the Hopkinsons had bought a collie pup in 1987. He became an excellent dog. We had coffee in Coxwold in spite of warnings from Geoff that the café had been known to charge extra for hot water in teapots! We were unable to verify this and we dissuaded Geoff from going over the hill to check opening times at Newburgh priory tea room. Throughout the morning ,various route changes had been suggested and some tried but we took the usual road now and cruised into the busy Market Place in Thirsk for sandwiches and pies. A following wind helped us home thro’ Sessay and Pilmoor. Just before B’bridge Geoff suggested another route choice and I followed his wheel while Frank and Graham stayed on the usual. Our route was pretty but involved some riding on grass and lifting of bikes over a gate so I can’t see it’s catching on with the Wheelers. Geoff left for K’bro’, we came down the A168 and I was home in time to cut the lawn.
It was a pity that the morning weather had influenced the day but it was an enjoyable ride.
