Boston Spa – Howden, 29th June 2021, 62 miles

A few of the usual gang turned up at Boston Spa Church. Signing on there were Pete C, whose recent operation on his hand doesn’t seem to have hurt his legs much, Frank, Bill,Steve P ,me ( Nick) and a half dozen was made up ( for the first time this year ,I think,) by an on-form Steve Booker.

Thinking of some of our recent rides, Frank ordered a flat one so it was Howden with a coffee in Bubwith which we approached by a welcome change thro’ Tad. and Cawood before Escrick . Decent weather and only slight headwind eased us to Bubwith where Bill and Steve P had previously decided to turn back. Steve was apparently involved in a party to watch some sporting event- not the Tour de France- and at the time of writing I do not know how the vibe will rock at the end of said party.

Howden looks a rather sleepy town with some fine old houses but appears to have taken only a few tentative steps into the 20th century. The 1000 new houses going up should help kick it into the 21st. The café/ bakery was OK and space was kindly made for us outside and while we lunched ,the sun shone warmer, allowing us to get some kit off for the return.

We had only a brief pause in Tadcaster for Steve to rehydrate and for Frank to finish a little cake with icing and a cherry which he had bought from those nice ladies in Bubwith some 40 miles and 2.5 hrs ago. Soon home then to our parting ways in Boston Spa.
