Six riders set off on the planned route to Allerthorpe, comprising Frank, Bill, Alec, Sean, Nick and Steve P. Weather conditions were good, but just a little cooler than expected. After Tadcaster, Bolton Percy and Acaster Malbis, the first coffee stop was Crockey Hill.
Discussion surrounded the recent tremendous achievements of club members Geoff and Mark. Frank selfishly leant Nick a bandana to keep his head warm for his solo return. Onwards and upwards (actually was flat as a pancake) through Wheldrake and Elvington. Then Frank made a cunning turn to Thornton, taking in a lovely forest route. The weather turned very favourable as the group arrived at Allerthorpe for an idyllic location for lunch. Bacon and sausage sandwiches seemed the favourite whilst Alec was admiring the large carp in the lake for possible “afters”.
The return leg was excellent sunny weather with a very welcome tail wind. The last cafe stop was the Little Acorn in Copmanthorpe. The cafe was buzzing, not surprisingly at the sight of 5 well honed athletes in Lycra !. Finally, the group headed through Askham Richard and Wighill at a good pace. It was a rather uneventful ride, thankfully, but hugely enjoyable and many thanks, as always, to Frank for an excellent route.
