Wetherby – Leyburn, 17th June 2021, 86 miles

This week’s Thursday ride went to Leyburn on a day when there was a great deal of caution about the weather. Those who didn’t turn up missed an opportunity.

There were 8 riders at the start who all headed down the well-trodden route to the station cafe at Bedale. Geoff managed to acquire a puncture on the way but sod’s law applied and we didn’t realise this until we were leaving. At this point, Mike Bosomworth departed for Northallerton and an early return for an evening BBQ. The rest of us, Geoff, Dennis, Nick, Pete Dack, Sean, Bob and myself Graham set off on a winding route along Wensleydale The sun was now out and sort sleeves were now the order of the day.

At the Posthorn cafe in Leyburn the temperature was very pleasant and we all sat outside for lunch. We set off for home through Spennithorne and down to the river at the Cover Bridge Inn. At this point, there was a slight revolt at the thought of being on the main road and so we turned around and took the road on the north bank of the Ure via Thornton Steward and Thirn.

We were now heading for the Spa Gardens and an ice cream stop. The weather was by now looking a little more threatening but it didn’t disappoint and we all made it back to Wetherby in the dry. Pete Dack had unusually come by car and didn’t have to face the prospect on another 14 miles on top of my mileage for the ride of 86 miles. Another cracking day.
