Wetherby – Allerthorpe, 25th April 2021, 72 miles

Smiles all round, except for Bob who seems to be cheekily sticking his tongue out at the photographer.

Eight Wheelers set out from the Shambles on a bright spring day into a NW breeze headed for Pocklington but settling for Allerthorpe Lake: Frank, Bill, Nick, Bob, Michael Br, Gregg, Simon and ride leader Steve W. After admiring Gregg’s rather nice new Cannondale bike in a fetching dusky purple we set off. Frank had a cunning plan to split the group at Wighill with himself Nick and Bill heading for the bridge at Naburn via Copmanthorpe leaving five to loop south via Tadcaster and Appleton Roebuck. Needless to say Frank’s group were waiting at the bridge when we arrived.

Frank headed back at Naburn leaving seven to reach Allerthorpe Lake via Escrick, Wheldrake and Melbourne. We passed many cyclists on the road and most seemed to be headed for Allerthorpe as it was rammed with lycra clad kings of the road like ourselves. After a short wait lunch was taken with a lakeside view, sausage and egg bap being the popular choice. It was agreed that had Mike Bo been with us he could have practised a bit of swimming and transitioning for his upcoming triatholon whilst we gave helpful suggestions.

The wind assisted return via Thornton, Elvington, Bishopthorpe and Copmanthorpe and Askham Richard was a breeze. A team photo at Naburn put Greg’s new steed front and centre with Bob giving the drivetrain a jolly good stare. 70-90 miles of tidy riding depending on start points with one or two clocking longest distances of the year so far. Thanks to Frank and Steve for routes and leading an excellent Sunday spring ride.
